About Hope Medical Supply, Inc.

In 2007, Hope Medical added a state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Equipment Showroom to their San Antonio location. This addition enables special needs customers who require assistive technology to have a first-hand experience with an array of mobility equipment. New products and technology being introduced in the marketplace make decision-making more time-consuming and difficult than ever and the showroom is designed to support consumers in this area of critical choices, presenting the entire spectrum of choices, from basic to high-tech. A RESNA* certified Assistive Technology Supplier Sam Esquivel heads the effort, establishing interdisciplinary associations of health professionals and third party payers to ensure each consumer’s safety, satisfaction, and the optimum functioning of the equipment.

The new department’s location in what has historically been a warehouse district, and is now an urban frontier, assures customers not only a central location, but plenty of free door-front parking.

In the 1990’s, as healthcare delivery began to shift to the home, Hope Medical Supply increasingly became the link between the physician and the patient, delivering critical equipment to either the home or institution and informing and counseling clients on optimum use of these products. Hope Medical Supply’s offerings include oxygen and respiratory therapy products, sleep therapy equipment and supplies, aerosol medication pharmacy services, rehabilitation and mobility related equipment, general durable medical equipment, wound care equipment and supplies, and enteral nutrition and related equipment. They also staff an in-house repair facility in support of the equipment they sell and rent. In 1996, the company was one of a select few home medical equipment providers to achieve Accreditation with Commendation through the Joint Commission, documenting the company’s high standards and customer satisfaction ratings.

In 1971, the company moved from its original home at 821 Dallas Street to its current location at 1116 East Houston. Even while the San Antonio Medical Center was taking shape on the northwest side of town, Hope Medical’s focus on high quality products and their timely distribution kept them centered in the downtown area in order to quickly serve all of San Antonio. In 1974, Hope Medical sold the ambulance service and in 1976, opened an additional distribution facility in Corpus Christi at 1010 Ayers at Six Points to begin serving all of South Texas.

The building on East Houston Street used to be owned by Harry Sugarman and has always served as a warehouse and distribution center. Owners Kathleen Weir Vale and Albert R. Vale also bought the adjoining property, formerly City Carbonics when more space was needed.

Established in 1941 Hope Ambulance Service, was the longest continuously operating ambulance service in San Antonio for many years. In the 1950's Hope Medical also began supplying hospitals and doctors' offices with medical supplies, over time broadening their line to include medical gases, high-tech equipment, and instrumentation, becoming a local leader in the physician and institutional markets.
